FORMAL SURVEILLANCE

CCTV can be the most effective strategy to decrease numbers of shoplifting, theft and vehicle crimes. By putting cameras into car parks and around Shopping Centre in Starley Cross we expect to see visible reduction in crime figures. CCTV is more effective in UK than in other countries and it has strong impact in reduction in vehicle crime and theft (Welsh and Farrington 2010)

NATURAL SURVEILLANCE

Natural surveillance and being able to see all areas of the street around residential and commercial areas, enables residents and business owners to keep an eye out for criminal activity.

REDEVELOPMENT

The manor park estate, is undergoing redevelopment, with the are being completely rebuilt from the ground up.

The aim of this redevlelopment is to design the area in a way that makes crime more difficult for offenders to commit, whilst giving residents a sense of community and pride.

DEFENSIBLE SPACE

The aim of SCP and defensible space perspective is to create the physical and symbolic barriers that can send a message to a potential offender about restricted access (Reynald and Elffers 2009). The purpose of such boundaries is to expand spheres of control and limit the opportunities for criminal behaviour.

ACTIVE CITIZENSHIP

Within Starley Cross we aim to hold social action projects, where residents will work together for the good of the community. With facilitating workshops and partner networking events, organising and delivering an active citizen program, we intend to unite the community and actively encourage involvement in community projects.

RUBBISH COLLECTION SCHEME

We aim to keep the area of Starley Cross, looking clean and well looked after. To do this we are introducing a bi-weekly rubbish collection and street cleaning scheme.

DEVELOPMENTAL CRIME PREVENTION

Identified here are four main areas that can be crucial for preventing crime in a developmental way.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

Neighbourhood watch is a great way to get the community involved in policing their area. It gives residents a reason to care about other people's behaviour in the community.
