RUBBISH COLLECTION SCHEME

Whilst examining the area of Starley Cross we noticed that there was an extremely high amount of rubbish littering the streets. Litter is a physical incivility that can lead to further social incivilities such as increased crime rates and fear of crime (Reynald 2015). Wilson and Kelling's (1982) broken windows theory furthers this by focusing on the possibility of increased criminal behaviour as a result of the incivilities. They explained that the fear created by these incivilities causes a breakdown in resident involvement, eventually leading to residents caring for their area less.

Plymouth City Council (n.d.)

We therefore propose the introduction of a biweekly rubbish collection and street sweeping scheme, in order to keep the area in a well maintained and cared for state, giving residents an area to be proud of.
